Prof. Dr. Clara Viñas graduated in Chemistry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and in Pharmacy at the Universitat de Barcelona. After earning her degrees, she was a pre-doctoral student at The University of Michigan (USA) under Prof. Ralph W. Rudolph supervision. Back to Barcelona, she worked for industry and, later she moved to Laboratori Municipal de Sabadell where she became the director to work on food and environmental control. She got her PhD in Pharmacy at the Universitat de Barcelona. In 1991, she earned a CSIC Tenured Scientist position at ICMAB that followed by promotion to Scientific Researcher in June 2002. In April 2006, she promoted to CSIC Full Professor where remains active nowadays. She was one of the researchers that updated the nomenclature of Boron clusters in Nomenclature for boranes and related species (IUPAC Recommendations 2019).
She was elected a full member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) last June 2021. She has received several awards including the “the Societat Catalana de Química research award for her excellent scientific career in the area of Chemistry”, and the medal of the symposium “Smart Inorganic Polymers”, medal of the CSIC among others.
Her scientific interests and her main achievements have/are built based on her chemical and pharmaceutical training. She has been active in new synthetic approaches of novel boron cluster compounds to be applied to new bio/materials taking benefit of their self-assembly for energy (catalysts, sensors/biosensors), environment (waste water treatment) and medicine (particularly antineoplastic, antibiotics, antifungal); visualization of drugs by Raman-microscopy techniques and radioimaging in collaboration with experts who own the equipment. In most of these areas, Prof. Viñas pioneered the research.
