Project Description

Professor Dr. Mehmet Yildiz has been the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Sabancı University (https://www.sabanciuniv.edu/en/) since 2018. He completed his undergraduate education in 1996 with the first rank in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Yıldız Technical University, Istanbul, and received his MSc. degree also from Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department at Istanbul Technical University in 2000. Between 1996-2000, he worked in two different companies as an R&D engineer and a project manager in the fields of welding and non-destructive testing of natural gas and petroleum pipelines. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2005 from Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada in the fields of computational fluid dynamics and semiconductor single crystal growth and then worked as a research associate and lecturer in the same department until 2007. In 2007, he joined Sabancı University, Faculty of Engineering Natural Sciences as a faculty member in Materials Science and Engineering Program. In 2013, he started establishing Sabancı University-Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Center (https://suimc.sabanciuniv.edu) and its Industrial Innovation Center, Composite Technologies Center of Excellence with Kordsa with the initial investment budget of roughly 40 million USD (https://youtu.be/QGPdrL-aqjo) and has served as founding director of these two centers until 2020. He has served as a deputy Chairperson and also the member of board of directors of Kordsa Company (https://www.kordsa.com/en) for over 6 years. He contributed to the establishment of Manufacturing Engineering graduate program at Sabancı University. Dr. Yildiz’s areas of expertise include advanced composite materials, nanocomposites, structural health monitoring and computational mechanics (fluid and solid) with meshless and mesh dependent methods. Dr. Yildiz has published over 140 SCI indexed scientific articles with high impact factor, more than 160 conference papers / presentations, 12 book chapters and 8 patent applications / registrations. As a result of his academic efforts, which cover a wide range of fields in depth and intensely, he has trained more 54 national and international PhD and MSc students (12 PhD students graduated, 15 PhD students in progress, 26 MSc students graduated, 1 MSc students in progress) and 20 postdoctoral researchers in different disciplines. He has a very dynamic research group, currently composed of 15 PhD students, 1 MSc student, 6 post-doctoral researchers and 10-15 engineers and technicians. Dr. Yildiz has participated as a principal investigator (PI), co-PI, researcher and advisor in more than 64 research projects with a total budget amounting up to 25 million USD.
